India Condemns Attacks on UN Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon, Calls for Accountability

India condemns attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon after a UNIFIL incident killed two and injured one. India urges accountability under UNSC Resolution 2589 and calls for ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel in conflict areas.

 

India has condemned recent attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, stressing that the safety and security of peacekeepers must remain a top priority. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, said peacekeepers operate in difficult conditions and are deployed with the backing of a UN mandate in conflict areas.

Describing peacekeeping as multilateralism in action, India underscored its role in advancing and strengthening accountability. New Delhi highlighted that it had piloted United Nations Security Council Resolution 2589, which seeks accountability for crimes against peacekeepers. The statement followed an incident reported by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, where two peacekeepers were killed and another seriously injured after a projectile hit a UN position.

India joined the global condemnation of the attack and urged all parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel. The development reinforces concerns over the risks faced by peacekeepers and highlights the urgent need for accountability and protection mechanisms in conflict zones.
